Music: John Grant * * * *
The Queen of Denmark (Bella Union)
Two months after Midlake released their latest album, fans of the Texan group are in for another treat.
The folk outfit have joined forces with Denver singer and label-mate John Grant -- best known as frontman of The Czars, now defunct and sadly underrated -- for an album that's every bit as wistful, evocative and pastoral as what we've come to expect from them.
Grant's understated yet captivating vocals recall those of Midlake's Tom Smith, and, as joined forces, they deliver several memorable compositions. The haunting Where Dreams Go to Die, lead single I Wanna Go to Marz and the compelling title track are especially strong in a set that lives up to the sum of its parts.
