Music: Hawk by Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan * * *

If you'd ever tipped the twee former singer from Belle & Sebastian to make a record with the hard-living Screaming Trees singer you'd have been laughed out of town by most serious musos.

This unlikely pairing struck gold on two studio albums to date and reunite again for this even finer and more accomplished record.

Campbell and Lanegan are blessed with two of the most distinctive voices in alternative music and together they're blissful.

On this their third full-length album together, it makes much more sense and their voices fit together perfectly.

The disposable honky tonky tomfoolery of Get Behind Me and Hawk are the only blots on the copybook. Otherwise, it's one swoonsome, heartbreaking duet after the other.
