Winstone: Break was good for Mel
Ray Winstone says Mel Gibson's break from acting has probably provided him with "the greatest education".
Both actors hit Hollywood for the premiere of their new thriller Edge Of Darkness, which is Mel's first time acting in front of the cameras for over seven years.
Speaking at the premiere, Ray said Mel hadn't shown any signs of nerves when they first started filming.
"If he was, he didn't show it... to be honest with you I think as an actor you're nervous when you go on set anyway, but he certainly didn't show it," Ray said.
"It's seven years, but it ain't as though he's been away from the game, he's been directing, producing and writing.
"It's probably the greatest education for an actor to go and do that. The man really knows film, you can tell that.
He added: "I think he probably felt it was time for him to come back and do something 'cause it's your first love. I suppose it's like revisiting your first girlfriend!"
