Though thus far unconfirmed, worrying rumours are circulating that perhaps the greatest bromantic movie of them all is about to be remade.
Tom Cruise is apparently planning a remake of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, with himself in the Redford role, and his friend and fellow scientologist John Travolta playing Butch.
Unlikely as it sounds, Paul Newman apparently gave Cruise his blessing before his death, and Tom is apparently excited about the idea. Though he is perhaps a little long in the tooth to play it, the Sundance Kid is said to be Cruise's favourite role.
One shudders to contemplate what the film will look like if it does get made, but perhaps we're worrying about nothing. In 2006, it was rumoured that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were going to co-star in a Butch Cassidy remake, and thankfully nothing came of that.
And perhaps we should leave the last word on the subject to Robert Redford, who when asked to comment on the Damon/Affleck rumours said: "There is no shortage of good, original ideas and there's no point to remakes. Why do they have to mess with things that were perfect the first time around?" Hear, hear.
