Wes Anderson has revealed Ralph Fiennes was the inspiration for his new film The Grand Budapest Hotel.

The English Patient star plays suave and elaborately meticulous hotel concierge Monsieur Gustave in the stylistic director's latest film, and Wes revealed the entire story developed from wanting to write such a character for Ralph to play.

Wes revealed: "The first idea for the movie had nothing to do with the setting. It had to do with this one character, played by Ralph Fiennes, Monsieur Gustave in our story, and he is inspired by an old friend.

"My friend Hugo and I made the script together, and our friend was the model for this character, and immediately as we started writing it, I began to think, 'You know, I've wanted to work with Ralph Fiennes for some years', and I started thinking I would love to write this for Ralph.

"In the end, I really don't know who else could play this, nor would I want to see anybody else play it."

The Moonrise Kingdom director also wanted to make a film set in Eastern Europe, that showed it as the place he knew.

He said: "Really for me, the experience of Eastern Europe that we tried to kind of create in our story, it comes from my own travel around that part of the world, but before that it comes from books, and books and movies and my impression of it.

"I feel like we're in that mixture of people inventing these places who haven't lived them, and taking inspirations from literature and films and making new stories that come out of those."

:: The Grand Budapest Hotel is in cinemas on March 7.
