Weinstein: Elba deserves an Oscar
Idris Elba deserves the Oscar for best actor for his performance as Nelson Mandela, Harvey Weinstein has said.
The Luther star portrays the late South African President in Justin Chadwick's Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, which Harvey and his brother Bob co-produced.
The 61-year-old hopes Idris' chances of scooping the honour would be high, saying: " If every girl in my office is right, he's winning the world's sexiest man next year on top of maybe an Oscar."
Idris added: "Would I like an Oscar? Yah man!"
Other possible contenders that have been rumoured include Robert Redford (All Is Lost), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf Of Wall Street) and Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club).
Harvey - who co-founded production company The Weinstein Company with Bob - is also the financial backing behind several movies, including August: Osage County, Lee Daniels' The Butler and Philomena, which have been hotly tipped for gongs, as the 2014 awards season approaches.
With the Golden Globe nominations to be announced on December 12, Harvey is hoping Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom and August: Osage County, starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, will get a look in.
"I'm looking forward to Idris and the movie, all the movies. We have August: Osage County this year and we're starting to screen that," he said.
Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom will be released in cinemas on January 3, with August: Osage County following on January 17, 2014.
