Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt's new film In Our Name will be available to watch online on the day of its release, as part of a new service for people who can't get to art house cinemas.

Curzon Cinemas will now screen many independent and world cinema films on its website, at the same time as the cinema release.

Joanne, who this week won a British Independent Film Award for her role in In Our Name, as a soldier coping with post-traumatic stress after serving in Iraq, is pleased the service will make niche films more widely available.

She said: "I love to watch things on the big screen but I'd rather people watch it on the internet than not see it at all.

"Some people are too busy to get to the cinema, for some people a cinema's not accessible to them and because it's not a nationwide release at the multiplexes, unless you are in a city, it's very hard to get to an art house sometimes.

"So just practicality-wise I'm really thrilled, because I just think hopefully we'll get a lot more people to view it."

The scheme will launch to online users in the UK and Ireland at with films available in HD for seven days after purchase, allowing the film to be watched more than once or in stages.

In Our Name is released in cinemas and on Curzon On Demand on Friday December 10
