WATCH: Claire Foy talks playing Neil Armstrong's wife in First Man and addresses American flag controversy

Claire Foy talks to Independent.ie about playing Neil Armstrong's first wife Janet in First Man.

First Man, based on the life story of Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, sees Ryan Gosling playing the astronaut.

The film tells the story of the Apollo 11 mission of 1969, the publicity-shy Armstrong and his wife, who had to deal with the emotions and fear around watching the potentially dangerous yet historic moment from solid ground with their two sons Mark and Eric.

Claire speaks about Janet's personality and how being a mother herself informed her portrayal of the woman.

She also addresses the controversy that erupted before the film released about whether or not the American flag was visibly placed on the moon in the film.

First Man releases in Irish cinemas on October 12.
