Julie Walters has told of her excitement at playing bossy boardinghouse owner Mrs Kehoe in upcoming period drama Brooklyn as she was such a fan of the book.

The Paddington actress is starring alongside Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson and Emory Cohen in the romance about an Irish girl living in New York in the 50s, who is torn between two men - one Irish and one American.

The book has been adapted for the big screen by Nick Hornby and directed by Boy A's John Crowley.

Julie said: " It is adapted from the amazing novel Brooklyn, by Colm Toibin, and I play Mrs Kehoe, who runs a boarding house for young single girls in Brooklyn in New York.

"It's an amazing story and it's a great character.

"I read the book yonks ago when it first came out, and when they said would you like to play Mrs Kehoe, that was the person I remembered. I loved her in the novel, so it's great to be able to play her."

Julie will next be seen in the Paddington movie as the Brown family's housekeeper Mrs Bird.

She said of making the film: "It's always a risk, because he's in people's hearts and people have had him in their childhood, so people are going go 'That's not the Paddington I know'. We were always going to be up against that.

"But this is the new Paddington and I believe it's true to the books and has the essence of what Michael Bond wrote."
