Mark Wahlberg could be starring in The Gambler remake, with Rupert Wyatt in talks to direct.

The Pain And Gain star is reportedly tipped to land the role of Axel Freed, originally played by James Caan in Karel Reisz's 1974 film, reported The Wrap.

It would also mark a reunion between Mark and screenwriter William Monahan, following their previous collaboration on Martin Scorsese's The Departed, which won them Oscar nominations for best supporting actor and best screenplay.

The new Paramount remake, loosely based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky's short novel of the same name, is described as a crime drama, following a literature professor whose gambling addiction lands him in hot water with his girlfriend, mother and "unsavoury gangsters".

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese were previously linked to the film, with The Hangover's filmmaker Todd Phillips also in talks to direct.

Writer James Toback, who penned the original film, has been against the idea of a remake, claiming he was not consulted about it before it was announced.

Meanwhile, Rupert - who directed prison movie The Escapist and Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes - has been given JJ Abrams' approval to direct Star Trek 3.

"He's incredibly talented and we'd be lucky to have someone as talented as Rupert. But there are things we're focusing on right now before the director, which is just sort of the fundamentals of where the story is gonna go," he told HitFix.

Mark, who has starred in dark comedy Pain And Gain with Dwayne Johnson and action-comedy 2 Guns alongside Denzel Washington, will next be seen in Peter Berg's war film Lone Survivor.
