Viola Davis is set to play American civil rights activist Barbara Jordan on the big screen.
Variety reports that the star, who was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for her role in The Help and for Best Supporting Actress for Doubt, will play the lead in the forthcoming biopic.
Trailblazing Jordan was the first African American from the South to be elected to Congress.
Her story has been documented by Mary Beth Rogers in the biography Barbara Jordan: American Hero, which will be used as the basis for the film.
Paris Barclay is in line to direct the film.
