John Travolta has revealed that Robert De Niro approved of him playing Mob boss John Gotti in an upcoming biopic.

The Pulp Fiction star is set to portray John Gotti Senior, the head of the Gambino crime family, in Joe Johnston's Gotti: In The Shadow Of My Father, which will start shooting in 2014.

Travolta admitted that he never asked Robert - who he acts alongside in Killing Season - for advice on playing a gangster.

"I don't think I need any tips, I've played enough gangsters in the past 30 years. Starting with Pulp Fiction, that was one of the definitive gangsters," said the Oscar-nominated actor.

"Get Shorty, Elmore Leonard, Face/Off and The Punisher, these are all gangsters I've played before but John Gotti is different because he was the godfather of reality. He is a modern gangster figure, so we never got into discussion other than he thought it was a good idea that I should play it."

John added: "John Gotti Sr is the ultimate glamorous gangster. I've been waiting to do that for a while."

Sir Anthony Hopkins and John's wife Kelly Preston will also star in Gotti: In The Shadow Of My Father, which has been in development since May 2013.

John, who is an ambassador for Australian airline Qantas, will share screen time with Christopher Plummer and Tye Sheridan in heist film The Forger.

Of Killing Season, he said: "The reason why I like this is because we don't do movies like this any more. We're not sending out the message that war doesn't solve things. It's really an anti-war message mixed in with this beef they have to settle with each other after they both committed war crimes."
