The Dingle Film Festival is in full swing this weekend with producer Ned Dowd and director Dominic Allan in attendance. But anyone could end up launching it.
Festival organiser Maurice Galway revealed to me that in 2010 he got a call from Saoirse Ronan's dad Paul to ask if she could drop by to see a few films.
"Saoirse had just finished shooting The Way Back with director Peter Weir so it was a big deal to have her turn up. It was Michael O'Sullivan, the late owner of The Phoenix Cinema, who, seeing Saoirse, suggested we ask her to launch the film festival that year.
"People were amazed to see her in all the pictures from Dingle but we had no idea Saoirse Ronan was going to launch the festival, and neither did Saoirse," Maurice told me.
Today at the festival, Amy Hubbard, casting director of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, is hosting a casting summit for actors and would-be actors in The Dingle Skellig Hotel, Co Kerry, at 2.30pm.
