Meryl Streep, Cameron Diaz and Milla Jovovich are among the actresses in the running to star in The ExpendaBelles.

The trio are said to be in talks to be in the female version of action-adventure The Expendables, which is rumoured to be shot in Bulgaria and Brunei, reported Deadline.

Millennium Films producer Avi Lerner told Bulgarian news site Standart: "The action movie will be spectacular - and in nothing inferior to the three male movies of the The Expendables."

Like The Expendables, which star action heroes such as Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jason Statham, the ExpendaBelles will feature a female cast, with a woman director and scriptwriters.

"There will be battles, special and visual effects and stunts - the spectacle will be equivalent to what Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis and Jean Claude van Damme have done," Avi continued.

"Two excellent screenwriters are already working on the picture. Now we are in search of a female director," he added.

Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, who previously wrote Legally Blonde and The Ugly Truth, have been working on the script for The ExpendaBelles.

Meryl, who won the best actress Oscar for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, will next star in August: Osage County alongside Julia Roberts and Benedict Cumberbatch. She has been filming musical Into The Woods with Johnny Depp and James Corden.

Cameron's upcoming cinematic offerings include Ridley Scott's The Counsellor, comedy The Other Woman and Will Gluck's Annie remake, while Milla will reprise her role as Alice in Resident Evil 6. She is also attached to play the Queen in Michael Almereyda's Cymbeline adaptation alongside Ethan Hawke and Ed Harris.
