IRISH film stars Colin Farrell, Cillian Murphy and Saoirse Ronan have all announced they will star in new big-budget films in the coming year.

The trio announced their plans at the Cannes Festival.

It will be a busy year again for the 'Hanna' and 'Atonement' actress Saoirse Ronan, who will take the lead role in a new film by 'Twilight' writer Stephanie Meyer called 'The Host'.

She will play a human whose body is taken over by a member of an alien race that has invaded earth.

She will also star as a human turned vampire in the new Neil Jordan film 'Byzantium', set to begin shooting in October.

'Batman' and 'Intermission' actor Cillian Murphy will star in a World War Two film produced by Dublin-based company Treasure Films.

The film, called 'Wayfaring Strangers', will follow a group of German soldiers captured in a remote farmhouse where a Jewish couple is hiding.

Meanwhile, the BBC is to make a movie inspired by Harper Lee's 'To Kill a Mockingbird' starring Murphy. It will transfer the story's setting from the 1930s American Deep South to contemporary England's industrial northeast.

The film, 'Broken', is adapted from Daniel Clay's 2008 novel of the same name, itself a modern retelling of the 1960 classic.

'In Bruges' writer and director Martin McDonagh is to direct a new film called 'Seven Psychopaths', starring Colin Farrell.

The Dublin actor will star alongside other Hollywood heavyweights Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke and Christopher Walken.
