The cast of the new Star Wars film is almost complete, according to Disney Studios.

Studios chairman Alan Horn also revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that shooting has already started on Episode VII, which is being directed by JJ Abrams.

He said of the cast: "We have a lot of them [in place]. We're just not completely done yet."

It isn't known who will star in the next instalment of the sci-fi saga although big names linked to the movie include Lupita Nyong'o, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ed Speleers, Gary Oldman, Ryan Gosling, Leonardo DiCaprio, Saoirse Ronan, Alex Pettyfer, Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael B Jordan.

Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill are also tipped to be returning to reprise their roles from the original trilogy.

Horn also confirmed that it hadn't all been plain-sailing when it came to perfecting the script for the film, which will be set 30 years after Return Of The Jedi.

"It's all about the screenplay. It has to be screenplay, screenplay, screenplay," he said.

But when asked whether the script was now where it should be, he confirmed: "It actually is now."

Episode VII is set for release in December 2015.
