Zack Snyder has been confirmed as the director of the new Superman movie, but Brandon Routh may not be returning to star.

The director of Watchmen, 300, and upcoming action movie Sucker Punch was chosen by producer Christopher Nolan and writer David Goyer to direct the next instalment of the superhero adventure on the big screen for Warner Bros.

But Zack told Variety that Superman Returns star Brandon Routh is "unlikely" to return as the man of steel.

The director is very excited about the new project.

He told Deadline.com: "I've been a big fan of the character for a long time, he's definitely the king of all superheroes, he's the one.

"It's early yet, but I can tell you that what David and Chris have done with the story so far definitely has given me a great insight into a way to make him feel modern. I've always felt he was kind of awesome. I'll finish Sucker Punch and get right at it."

Zack was chosen after meeting with Chris and producer Emma Thomas.

Other directors considered for the big budget blockbuster included Moon's Duncan Jones, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Jonathan Liebesman, Top Gun's Tony Scott and Cloverfield's Matt Reeves.

Batman filmmaker Chris Nolan is a mentor for the project, and has advised on the plot as well as helping recruit the director.

Zack said: "He provides that extra bit of wisdom to a process that sometimes lacks it. It's the best situation we could be in for this character."
