Anna Paquin will not appear in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, director Bryan Singer has revealed.

The Oscar-winning actress had shot a "rescue" scene alongside Magneto (Sir Ian McKellen), Professor X (Sir Patrick Stewart) and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore), but the sequence has been cut from the final edit because it was "extraneous".

Bryan told Entertainment Weekly: "It's a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go.

"Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she's in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won't appear in it."

The filmmaker revealed that Anna "understood" his decision.

"She completely understood. It's very disappointing, but she's very professional and she knows that stuff happens, particularly with material you shoot early on in production. Films evolve," he explained.

Bryan, who is taking over directing duties from Matthew Vaughn for the sequel, said the cut had nothing to do with the True Blood star's performance.

"She did a fantastic job. She was awesome in the sequence," he said, adding: "She's a brilliant actress. I would work with her in a heartbeat."

Days Of Future Past, which follows on from X-Men: First Class, will see some of the original cast such as Ian, Patrick, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and Ellen Page feature alongside the newer generation of X-Men stars like James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult.

The film will be released in May 2014.
