Michael Shannon has revealed that it was "moving" to meet Richard Kuklinski's daughters in person.

The Oscar-nominated actor, who portrays the real-life contract killer in Ariel Vromen's The Iceman, admitted that Kuklinski's family didn't offer any input into the film, but Michael later met his daughters - Merrick and Christen - at the film's New York premiere.

"When we were making the film, they said they weren't interested in participating. But they reached out to the director and said they were interested in seeing it," he said.

"Merrick was very moved by it and by my efforts - it was amazing to meet her. She was the one who was really close to Richard, the daddy's girl, so it was pretty moving."

He added: "I think it was rough for her because, like any biopic, it's not completely true all the time. But she really loved her dad a lot and it was very emotional for her to see someone put that much effort into trying to understand her father because I think most people just think he's a cold-blooded psycho."

To get into Kuklinski's mindset, the 38-year-old watched Jim Thebaut's HBO documentary The Iceman: Confessions Of A Mafia Hitman, featuring one-to-one interviews with the killer.

"He died in prison before I even knew who he was, but I did get to watch the full unedited interviews with him over and over again so it was like I got to spend some time with him," he recalled.

"I found him very relatable. If you didn't know what he had done, I don't think anybody would dislike the guy. He's very sharp and he's very charming in his way, and doesn't seem like an intrinsically rotten person."

:: The Iceman opens in cinemas on June 7.
