Saoirse's stand-out fashion moments
Our Fashion Editor selects the Carlow actress’ biggest sartorial successes and red carpet hits.
This is the dress Saoirse has to beat at this year’s Oscars — her utterly stunning green sequined emerald Calvin Klein Collection gown from the 2016 Academy Awards. An age-appropriate, flattering slash front worn with hair down, green eye make-up, fresh skin and smokey eyes. The genius move was the mismatched earrings. Saoirse may not have picked up the Oscar for Brooklyn but she won our Best Dressed statue hands down.
Stylist Elizabeth Saltzman praises Saoirse for making choices based on her heart. Her Hedi Slimane draped, ivory silk couture creation for Saint Laurent proved a major girl-crush piece when she wore it to the Golden Globe Awards two years ago, with Brian Atwood shoes and Chopard jewellery. It was one of the best style nights for years, and the then 21-year-old Irish actress held her own with panache.
Accepting her Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy in January, Saoirse was in-keeping with the Time’s Up campaign to wear black, in support of victims of sexual harassment, in a statement-shouldered Atelier Versace gown.
Saoirse steals the show in November 2015, at the 7th Annual Governors Awards in this totally relaxed look of an Emilia Wickstead pink and grey pleated dress and Alexander McQueen heels. The pink lip was the perfect touch.
Her style evolution has been fascinating to watch and, of late, Saoirse’s been wearing a lot of memorable Gucci outfits. This glamazon short gúna and GG Marmont high heels stole the show at the label’s Cruise 2018 fashion show at Palazzo Pitti in Florence last May.
The actress proved her ability to work pastels in a streamlined Louis Vuitton dress, with Christian Louboutin heels and Cartier jewellery, at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last month.
I didn’t like the unfunny Aer Lingus sketch on Saturday Night Live last December, and the Saoirse song about how to pronounce her name was only OK, but I applauded her funky metallic Gucci dress, which looked terrific with hair scooped back and knotted, and rockers’ ankle boots.
Saoirse collaborated with Irish designer Helen Steele to create this bespoke print, and wore it with pride to the Irish premiere of Brooklyn in 2015. It had the divisive Marmite factor, but I loved it.
Saoirse has loved wearing John and Simone Rocha’s designs since she was a teenager and, this year, she set Irish hearts beating faster when she rocked up to The Late Late wearing Simone’s SS18 cream crystal-trimmed, washed satin, scallop- frill dress (€1,105), which immediately triggered traffic to her only Irish stockist, Havana in Dublin’s Donnybrook.
TWEED WITH A TWIST
The fashion chameleon came out yet again in Saoirse last October when she wore this Alessandra Rich raw-edged tweed mini-dress with white collar/cuff, Giampiero Bodino drop earrings and an intricate braided up ’do.
YES TO CLASHING COLOURS
The Lady Bird star thrilled in Palm Springs in January in a striking orange and pink satin Gucci gown with thigh-high slit which showed off her amazing legs. Again, her short hair and Fernando Jorge jewellery was on point.
MASTERCLASS IN COLOUR POPS
The Carlow woman pairs statement turquoise drop earrings with a black sequinned cut-out detail Ralph & Russo gown for the Governors Awards in Hollywood last November.
