Mark Ruffalo is in discussions to play US Olympic wrestling star Dave Schultz in new drama Foxcatcher.

The Avengers Assemble actor could be joining Steve Carell and Channing Tatum in the film, Variety reports.

The movie is based on the story of John du Pont, heir to the du Pont chemical fortune, who built a wrestling training facility called Team Foxcatcher on the grounds of his estate.

Du Pont, a paranoid schizophrenic, shot and killed Schultz, his longtime friend, in 1996.

Crazy Stupid Love star Steve is set to play du Pont, while Channing will play Schultz's younger brother.

Mark, who plays The Hulk in Joss Whedon's new Avengers flick, will soon be seen on screen alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim Robbins in sex addiction comedy Thanks For Sharing.
