Seth Rogen has revealed he and co-writer/director Evan Goldberg had to rewrite the ending for their apocalyptic comedy This Is The End, because test audiences weren't happy.

The film starring Seth, James Franco, Jay Baruchel and featuring cameos from Rihanna and Emma Watson, all playing themselves, has proved a box office smash hit in the US. The film is set during an apocalypse which takes place at the same time as a party at James Franco's house. The friends eventually realise they can escape the apocalypse and get into heaven with altruistic acts.

Seth revealed: "Overwhelmingly people were like, 'What happens in heaven? What happens in heaven? We had shown people so much crazy s***, we didn't expect them to want more."

Seth and Evan - who also co-wrote Superbad and Pineapple Express - had actually first scripted a heaven scene, but cut it because they thought it was "cheesy". It featured smoking marijuana with Elvis and dancing with Marilyn Monroe.

But they decided to write a new ending featuring everyone dancing in heaven to Everybody (Backstreet's Back) with the band.

When the group was approached about doing the cameo, the trailer for This Is the End was already out online.

"They had actually seen it," revealed Seth. "So when we called them and asked them to be in it, they already knew what the movie was and were excited about it. So it was actually really not that hard. They were super psyched about it.

"We solved our problem with one day involving a boy band."
