Reese Witherspoon has told how she experienced the "gruelling" physical reality of the 1,000 mile trek that inspired her new film Wild.

The Oscar-winning actress stars as Cheryl Strayed in the movie, based on Cheryl's best-selling non-fiction book about her hike across the 1,100 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail.

Reese admitted at the Toronto International Film Festival: " Physically it was very challenging. I really carried a 60lb backpack through the wilderness.

"We shot the movie over six weeks in Oregon in October, November, it was getting really, really cold. So we were walking through freezing cold rivers and hiking up mountains for hours and hours and it was physically really gruelling.

"But so exciting and everybody on the crew was so excited to be part of such a beautiful story."

The 38-year-old actress is also a producer on the film, and Reese explained she had decided to make her own movie after being left disappointed by the female roles on offer in Hollywood.

She said: " Quite honestly I'd been looking at female roles in Hollywood for probably four years prior and they just weren't as interesting as I thought they could be. So I started my company and I started reading veraciously and this is one of the first manuscripts I read."

Reese's performance in the film - directed by Dallas Buyers Club's Jean-Marc Vallee - is already sparking talk of Oscar nominations as is Laura Dern's performance as Cheryl's mother in the film.

But Reese said: "It's always so flattering, I'm so touched that people support my performance, but the most important thing is that people see Cheryl's story, that's all I set out to do, and I feel excited for her."
