Tahar Rahim has revealed he tried out for a small role in Star Wars: Episode VII.

The Bafta-nominated star of A Prophet auditioned for the part of a soldier in JJ Abrams' upcoming seventh instalment of the sci-fi series, but failed to win the role.

" I had an audition for Star Wars but they didn't take me. It was for a soldier role," he said.

"It was cool to do it any way. It was such a CIA project - you cannot talk and you cannot reveal anything," the actor added. "It's a kid's dream to be in something like X-Men, Star Wars or James Bond. When I was a kid, I dreamt of that so if I could do it, I would."

Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are confirmed to reprise their roles in the new Star Wars film, alongside newcomers John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac and Domhnall Gleeson.

Tahar, who stars in French-language drama The Informant, found his next role in Fatih Akin's The Cut challenging, because he had to remain mostly silent.

The period Western, which stars the French actor as a man who tries to track down his family, was shot in five different countries including Cuba, Canada, Jordan and Germany. It will be released later this year.

"I speak for 20 minutes and then I don't speak any more. That was hard to play without words," he admitted.

"You can't rely too much on body language either otherwise you're like a puppet. You have to find the right thing to make the audience understand what you're trying to say, and this was very hard. I learned a lot. The film is like an homage to (Charlie) Chaplin and Sergio Leone. It's epic," he added.

:: The Informant is in cinemas now.
