Rafe Spall has revealed he was grateful for the "leg up" he got in his career from being Timothy Spall's son.

The 27-year-old actor - who stars in Channel 4's new comedy series Pete Versus Life and is filming the movie adaptation of hit novel One Day, co-starring Anne Hathaway - insists he is not ashamed to admit it was a help to have the Harry Potter star as his father, when starting out.

Rafe said: "I come from exceptional circumstances, my dad's a famous actor so my previous agent was his agent, and so I had a bit of a leg up in getting the agent in the first place."

He went on: "I don't think you get jobs because your dad's famous, but it gets you through the door and from there you've got to prove yourself.

"A lot of children of actors get cagey about it but I think if people are a bit cagey, they're a bit insecure and I'm not insecure, I'm very happy with my career. I'm proud of who my dad is and I'm proud of where I come from."

Rafe experienced some bitterness about his family set-up in the early days of his career but now says: "I feel I've done some reasonable work, so I've done a lot to prove myself as an actor in my own right. I don't think I'd be here if I hadn't."

Pete Versus Life sees the actor star as Pete Griffiths, a struggling young sports journalist who lacks the necessary social antenna to steer him smoothly through life, resulting in him getting into all sorts of embarrassing scrapes and situations.

:: Pete Versus Life begins on August 6 on Channel 4.
