HOLLYWOOD movie star and producer Will Smith delighted an 11-year-old fan by replying to a letter the schoolboy had sent.

The sixth-class pupil was one of a number of youngsters who wrote to people they admired, nearly all celebrities -- and, so far, the 'Men in Black' star is the only one to have responded.

The letter has made Smith fan Elijah Odigie into a minor celebrity himself.

"I always say 'if something I do can make someone's day better, then I've done a good job!'," Smith wrote in his reply.

The actor, estimated to be worth $200m (€145m), told Elijah: "Keep chasing those dreams and make the most of every day."

The letter writing was done at the suggestion of Andre O'Connell, one of the teachers at St Nicholas' Monastery National School in Dundalk, Co Louth.

"I was talking to the students about people we admire and we decided we would write to them . . . most were Hollywood stars," he said.
