Roman Polanski's next film is set to be the true story of a Polish murderer who was caught after he made his crime into a novel.

True Crime has been inspired by a New Yorker article by David Grann about the murder of Dariusz Janiszewski by writer Krystian Bala, who wrote about the details his crime in a sado-sexual novel Amok.

Bala was tracked down by detective Jacek Wroblewski, using his book to catch the killer, Playlist.com reports.

The screenplay has been written by The Last King of Scotland's Jeremy Brock and Rush Hour's Brett Ratner is producing, while Polanski is currently in negotiations to direct the project with Focus Features.

Small businessman Janiszewski's body was found in the Oder River in Poland in 2000, leading to a police investigation which ran cold after six months and was presumed unsolved.

But then detective Wroblewski took up the case and noticed calls had been made to Janiszewski's cell phone that was never recovered and was actually sold on eBay by Bala.

When Wroblewski read Bala's book Amok he found it to be about a murder almost identical to Janiszewski's and about a character with the English version of Dariusz Janiszewski's first name.
