Kathryn Bigelow's Point Break - starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze - is getting a make-over.

Alcon Entertainment have announced it is remaking the 1991 action-thriller for release by Warner Bros, movie blog reports.

Oscar-winning director Kathryn's original movie, starring Keanu as an FBI agent who falls in with a gang of surfers led by Patrick, has become a classic.

The new version is set in the world of international extreme sports, and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring, but it has not been revealed if the remake will involve surfing, or a different extreme sport.

Kurt Wimmer, who wrote box office hit Salt, starring Angelina Jolie, and the screenplay for the upcoming Total Recall remake, has rewritten the script and is on board to produce.

Producers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove said: "Who doesn't love the Kathryn Bigelow original and its pure heart-pounding action and thrills?

"Kurt's take infuses the story and characters with new twists and settings."

Michael DeLuca added: "Point Break wasn't just a film, it was a Zen meditation on testosterone fuelled action and manhood in the late 20th century and we hope to create the same for the young 21st!"

The film is being fast tracked, and potential directors will soon be approached about project.
