Peter Berg: Rihanna's a grafter

Rihanna was "harder-working" than expected, Battleship director Peter Berg has revealed.

The filmmaker admitted that the pop star - who made her big-screen debut as Petty Officer Cora Raikes in the sci-fi epic - proved her worth on the film set alongside more experienced actors like Liam Neeson and Taylor Kitsch.

"She was harder-working. When she got the job, she said, 'The one thing I care about is that you treat me as any other actor, make me work, don't bull**** me, give it to me straight'," he said.

"She meant that. Rihanna is a bad-a** and she works really hard. I think most great talent, if it's Will Smith or Madonna, the common value there is work ethic. They will just keep going, they will work their butts off."

Peter admitted Rihanna's casting came as a shock to many.

"There was a certain inherent in the film intelligentsia that clutter certain internet sites, the idea that Rihanna was going to be in a movie was the most scandalous decision ever made and I found that quite amusing," he continued.

"People thought that Rihanna was going to be in a bikini, running around a navy ship with a machine gun, which couldn't be further from the truth. She does a wonderful job of playing just a regular sailor, and she's really good in it. I've enjoyed having some of the sceptics see the film, and admit to me, 'She was really great'."

:: Battleship opens in cinemas on April 11.
