Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast has scooped seven nominations for the Oscars 2022 awards with nods for Original Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture as well as Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor.
Judi Dench has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Branagh’s Belfast and Ciarán Hinds has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
Hinds, who was born in Belfast, is nominated in the best supporting actor category alongside The Power Of The Dog’s Smit-McPhee and Plemons, Troy Kotsur for Coda, and JK Simmons for Being The Ricardos.
It will be a surprise to many that Caitriona Balfe has missed out on a nomination. She has already picked up nominations at the Bafta, Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the British Independent Film Awards, the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice for her part in Belfast.
Instead Balfe’s co-star Dame Judi Dench was a surprise inclusion in the contenders.
Van Morrison has a nomination for Best Original Song for “Down To Joy” from Belfast. He’s up against Beyoncé, who’s nominated for co-writing “Be Alive” from King Richard and Billie Eilish who is nominated for her Bond theme “No Time To Die,”
Having received Oscar nods in director, picture and screenplay, Branagh has now beaten the current record for nominations in most categories over a career.
The title, with six, is currently shared by Walt Disney, Alfonso Cuarón and George Clooney.
Killarney actress Jessie Buckley has picked up a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her part in The Lost Daughter.
Limerick actress Ruth Negga also missed out despite being hotly tipped for her part in Rebecca Hall’s Passing. Negga received a best actress nomination five years ago for Loving.
There was disappointment for other big names too, including Lady Gaga who had also been widely tipped to land a best actress nomination for her performance in House Of Gucci. The category will be contested by Jessica Chastain for The Eyes Of Tammy Faye and Penelope Cruz for Parallel Mothers, whose inclusion had looked less certain.
Newcomers Rachel Zegler, the star of West Side Story, and Licorice Pizza’s Alana Haim also missed out on a spot among the contenders for the gong.
There was also disappointment for Leonardo DiCaprio, who failed to land a best actor nod for Don’t Look Up, despite recognition from Bafta last week, while Bradley Cooper and Ben Affleck both missed out on supporting nominations for Licorice Pizza and The Tender Bar despite strong showings and precursor events.
The Power Of The Dog is the frontrunner with nominations, including best picture, while stars Kirsten Dunst, her partner Jesse Plemons and co-star Kodi Smit-McPee, are all recognised in supporting categories.
The 94th Oscars will take place on March 27.
