Edward Norton could soon be gearing up to play the lead villain in The Bourne Legacy.

The Hulk star is said to be in talks to join Tony Gilroy's fourth instalment of the spy franchise alongside Jeremy Renner, stepping into Matt Damon's famous footsteps in the lead, with Rachel Weisz as the love interest.

No further details are known about Edward's role as yet, reported Variety.

In the Bourne spin-off, which is scheduled to go into production this September, Jeremy will not portray Matt's alter-ego Jason Bourne, who worked for the arm of the CIA.

Instead, he will play a new character: a spy from a covert and dangerous government programme that is "even more dangerous than Treadstone".

The Bourne Legacy is scheduled for a summer 2012 release.
