Bill Murray plaid the part, living up to his eccentric nature as he promoted his latest movie Moonrise Kingdom at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Lost In Translation star was decked out in a checked outfit as he posed for photos alongside co-stars Tilda Swinton, Bruce Willis and Edward Norton.

While Bill, who portrays Walt Bishop in Wes Anderson's new feature, chose a checked shirt and trousers with clashing jacket, Tilda glammed it up in a sheer blouse, blue skirt and heels.

Bill, 61 - who has been in every single one of Wes' films - played with a miniature camera, pulled funny faces and did jokey poses.

He later joked: "I really don't get any other work than with Wes. I just sit by the phone. The making of these films has just become more of a fun adventure all the time."

"I'm just so happy at how Wes just gets better," he added.

The movie, which was written by Wes and Roman Coppola and is the opening film at the festival, tells the story of two 12-year-olds (played by newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward) who fall in love before making a secret pact and running away together.

Bruce, who plays local sheriff Captain Sharp, said it was wonderful to be directed by Wes and said the film's message was universal.

He said: "It's about love. It's about new love, and young love, and love that is mixed up and messed up. It's all still the same story about how everybody needs to be loved - even the cops."
