Carey Mulligan says she finds singing terrifying

Carey Mulligan has admitted that she preferred to fade into the background during musical turns while filming Inside Llewyn Davis.

The Drive actress stars in the upcoming Coen brothers film about folk music as Justin Timberlake's character's wife, and her real-life husband, Mumford And Sons' Marcus Mumford, was the film's associate music producer.

She admitted: "I'm always very nervous about singing in front of people.

"Singing, for me, seems to be the most nerve-racking thing to do. And when you're surrounded by actual musicians like Oscar (Isaac, who plays Llewyn Davis) and Justin, it's even worse."

Carey claimed that she "got away" with the scene by trilling away in the background, and joked that she told the Coens she could sing "to get the job!"

She also confessed that while the other cast members "jammed" away with their guitars during breaks in filming, she just tapped her feet on the floor.

"That's about as much as I get involved in," she said.

:: Inside Llewyn Davis is in cinemas on Friday, January 24.
