(Drama. Starring Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Valeria Golino, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Fabrizio Gifuni, Matilde Gioili. Directed by Paolo Virzi. Showing exclusively at the IFI)
Based on the novel by US author Stephen Amidon, this gripping Italian drama begins with a catering worker knocked off his bicycle following a banquet but unfolds into a wonderfully involving story of greed, privilege and betrayal.
The device of interweaving stories does recall Paul Haggis’s Crash but this is a far superior tale, with Valeria Bruni Tedeschi particularly memorable as Carla, the
cosseted wife of a scheming financier (Fabrizio Gifuni), who has philanthropic ambitions of her own even as her husband is effectively plotting against his own country.
