Eddie Redmayne undergoes a spectacular transformation in the first trailer for Tom Hooper's new film The Danish Girl.
Based on a true story it stars Redmayne as Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of sexual reassignment surgery. Alicia Vikander stars as his Gerda Wegener and Matthias Schoenaerts and Ben Whishaw also star.
Hooper, who also directed The Kings Speech, previously worked with Redmayne on his big screen adaptation of Les Miserables.
The film will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 5.
It almost feels as if Eddie Redmayne, winner of the Best Actor prize at Sunday evening’s Oscars ceremony, has come out of nowhere. His performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything is, of course, a tour de force. He plays the scientist over the course of 30 years, from brilliant Cambridge student to world-famous and wheelchair-bound astrophysicist, portraying in closely observed and often painful detail the physical deterioration brought on by the onset of motor neurone disease.
