Saoirse Ronan has kicked off awards season with a win, nabbing Best Actress for Lady Bird at the Gotham Independent Film Awards.

The 23-year-old Irish star dedicated her award to "the two women who mean so much to me," referencing her mother and Lady Bird writer and director Greta Gerwig.

It brings Saoirse one step closer to an Oscar, having racked up two nominations already for Atonement and Brooklyn.

At the awards at New York City's Cipriani Wall Street on Monday night she was up against Melanie Lynskey for I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, Haley Lu Richardson for Columbus, Margot Robbie for I, Tonya, and Lois Smith for Marjorie Prime.
