Saoirse Ronan looks closer than ever to her third Oscar nomination after she picked up the award for Best Actress at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

The Carlow actress (23) was honoured for her role as Christine McPherson in 'Lady Bird', the critically acclaimed film by Greta Gerwig.

The film follows Saoirse in the lead role as a disillusioned teenager growing up with her mother in Sacramento, California, who dreams of leaving her hometown and moving to New York.

Nominations for this year's Oscars will be announced on January 23, with other big contenders including Margot Robbie for her role in 'I, Tonya', Meryl Streep for 'The Post', and Frances McDormand for 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri'.

She is also nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes, which will be held on Sunday.

While her performance has received acclaim, 'Lady Bird' itself has also been honoured with universal praise.

Saoirse previously received Oscar nominations for her roles in the films 'Atonement' and 'Brooklyn'.
