Saoirse Ronan is leading the way for the Irish nominees at the Golden Globes tomorrow evening.

The Carlow actress (23) is nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy at the glamorous awards ceremony for her role as Christine McPherson in 'Lady Bird'.

She will attend the ceremony with 'Lady Bird' director Greta Gerwig - and both women will wear black in support of the Time's Up movement, aimed at supporting women who have brought forward sexual assault claims in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

"It's the most important thing," she said.

"For all of these people, men and women, to be able to come together and use their influence and open up the conversation and raise awareness and support anyone who is going through or questioning their safety when they're on set.

"I think it's needed. It's invaluable and it's paramount that this happens now."

Ronan has received rave reviews for her role in the film and is thought to be a serious contender for a nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.

Fellow Irish actress Caitriona Balfe (38) has received a nomination for Best Actress in a Drama TV series for her role in 'Outlander'.

The Dubliner stepped out at Los Angeles' Chateau Marmont Hotel earlier this week to attend 'W Magazine's pre-Golden Globes party.

Playwright Martin McDonagh has been honoured with a nomination for Best Director and Best Screenplay for his critically acclaimed crime film 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri'.

McDonagh (47) also produced the film which has received a total of six nominations, including for Best Picture.

Nora Twomey (46), from Co Cork, one of the founders of the Oscar-nominated 'Cartoon Saloon', has seen her first solo feature, 'The Breadwinner', receive a nomination in the Motion Picture, Animated category.

It tells the story of an Afghan girl who dresses like a boy so that she can provide for her family. Twomey received the backing of Hollywood heavyweights for the film, with A-list actress Angelina Jolie serving as an executive producer.
