Maroon 5's Adam Levine has revealed how Irish director John Carney inspired him to act when he approached him about his film Begin Again.

The singer said he had never considered acting until the Dubliner suggested it.

"It took a huge leap of faith on John Carney's part because I had never acted before," 35-year-old Adam said.

"He reached out to me and asked me, pretty randomly, if I was interested in acting.

"I actually said to him [that I was] not, until he called," he added.

The track Lost Stars from the film - which also stars Kiera Knightley - is nominated in the Best Original Song category at this year's Oscars.

"It's such a rarefied air that we're gonna be in, as far as being a musician at that particular show," he said. "I've always been a huge fan of the Oscars and the way they put it all together.

"It's the godfather of all awards show. It's just so far removed from what I do."
