Lady Bird lands in second place at All-Ireland box office on opening weekend

Lady Bird has soared into second place at the all Ireland box office after opening weekend.

Greta Gerwig's coming of age comedy drama, which stars Saoirse Ronan, in the title role, grossed €327,013 in Ireland and Northern Ireland over the weekend, coming second to Black Panther which raked in €527,275 and €2.3m gross to date.

Lady Bird opened in the US last year and anticipation has been high ahead of it's Irish release as the film has been nominated for give Oscars, including Best Actress for Ronan as well as Best Picture and Best Director.

Also opening this weekend was I, Tonya (starring Margot Robbie, who is also up for Best Actress at the Oscars) which took €121,629, making it the fifth favourite at the box office.

In third position was The Greatest Showman with a weekend gross of €149,312 (€2.6m overall).

Lady Bird will open at an additional 18 cinemas from Friday bringing the total number of sites to 92.  Five of the top 10 UK and Ireland sites for Lady Bird were Irish-based, with the number one site being the reopened Stella Theatre in Dublin.
