How many sequels are too many? When it comes to the Saw franchise it seems there is no limit.

The hugely popular horror movie series, who spawned the term 'torture porn', supposedly bowed out with Saw 3D in 2010 after diminishing box office returns from Saw VI.

However, Saw 3D went on to make €136m at the worldwide box office and it became the highest grossing film in the series in the foreign market.

Critics were less impressed - it has a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the worst in the series.

Even so, Lionsgate reportedly have original director and writer James Wan and Leigh Whannell on board to executive produce.

Also, Sorority Row writers Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger have reportedly signed up to write the script for Saw: Legacy, according to The Tracking Board.

Rumours of an eighth film have been circulating since 2013 and Lionsgate has yet to confirm the plans.
