Irish film 'Room' has been nominated for three gongs at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Lenny Abrahamson's films stars Brie Larson as a woman who has been confined to a tiny room for years by her kidnapper, a man by whom she has had a child who has never been outside.

Larson is nominated for Best Female Lead for her performance while Emma Donoghue is up for Best First Screenplay.  Donoghue wrote the novel on which the film is based.  Also, the film is in the running for Best Editing.

Leading the pack, however, is Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara's love story, Carol, which bagged six nominations.

Netflix's first original feature film, Beasts of No Nation, starring Idris Elba received five and Tangerine and Anomalisa received four.
