Infamous tampon scene never made Fifty Shades of Grey cut
The most pressing question regarding the big screen adaptation of EL James racy 'Fifty Shades of Grey' has finally been answered.
The infamous tampon scene will not feature in the movie.
The scene, which involves BDSM aficionado Christian Grey (played by Jamie Dornan in the movie) removing a tampon from his girlfriend Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson), was never even in the running.
"It didn’t make it into the movie,” director Sam Taylor-Johnson told Variety. “It was never even discussed.”
Producers weren't fans of the scene, apparently. Michael De Luca, said, “A lot of it was very literal. The movie didn’t need to do that. It’s a completely different medium.”
Taylor-Johnson added that there is probably less sex in the film than people think.
“It’s say it’s pretty 50/50,” she said. “I think the sex scenes are integral to the story. They are not gratuitous. It tracks the story.”
Author EL James has said she is happy to have the content toned down for the film. She describes the film as "first and foremost a romantic love story" and the sex is just "part of that".
She told Variety, “People who haven’t read the books might be surprised that there isn’t more sex on the screen, but that’s because they’ve gone by media reports of ‘Fifty Shades,’ which have tended to err on the side of the sensational. I’m pretty sure the millions of fans who have the read the trilogy will think there is enough sex.”
Fifty Shades of Grey releases in Ireland on February 13.
