Irish stars Saoirse Ronan, Aidan Turner, and Chris O'Dowd are filming the "world's first painted animation feature".

The animated biopic of painter Vincent Van Gogh will include 57,800 oil paintings by 60 different artists and will chart the final months and mysterious death of the artist.

It will take the painters a year to finish the task.

Douglas Booth and Saoirse Ronan star in the film alongside Poldark's Aidan Turner, Chris O'Dowd, Jerome Flynn of Game of Thrones fame, John Sessions, and Eleanor Tomlinson.

Filming has begun in London with Dorotoa Kobiela and Hugh Welchman directing.

Ronan's most recent project was with Ryan Gosling on his directorial debut Lost River while Turner is completed the first series of BBC period drama Poldark.

The finale of the latest series of Moone Boy was broadcast earlier this month and O'Dowd has also completed filming Hippie Hippie Shake and Icon, which is based on the story of Irish journalist David Walsh who exposed Lance Armstrong's substance abuse.
