Mandy Moore could relate to her character Rapunzel in her new Disney film.
The US singer and actress, 26, almost didn't audition to voice the part of the girl kidnapped in a tower in Tangled.
But she told the Daily Mirror: "I could really relate to Rapunzel. She's approaching her 18th birthday trapped and isolated in that tower.
"I started out in this business at 14, very young, and I grew up in a strange bubble of over-protection, much more sheltered than my friends. I understand that yearning for freedom, wanting to control your own life."
Mandy, who released her first album at 15, when she was dubbed the new Britney Spears, has appeared in films A Walk To Remember, American Dreamz and Chasing Liberty, as well as TV shows Entourage, Scrubs and Grey's Anatomy.
She said she was interested in pursuing darker roles.
She told the newspaper: "It has to be right though. I've had the opportunity to play the drug-dealer who gets gang-raped - but I'm not doing it without a reason or just to show people that I can be sexy and dark."
The actress, who lives with her husband musician Ryan Adams in Los Angeles, said: "It needs to happen and I'm confident that it will."
