Matthew McConaughey has said the first time he saw his skinny self on screen in Dallas Buyers Club, he thought he looked like a reptile.

The actor lost more than three stone to play Ron Woodroof, a man diagnosed with HIV in the 80s and given 30 days to live.

On seeing himself on screen at that weight, Matthew said he thought: "'Whoa, you look like a reptile, man.' I didn't feel like I was watching me."

He also spoke about his family's reaction to his weight loss, including his three-year-old daughter: "They saw me every day. But there was one day when Vidy goes 'Why is your neck like a giraffe?'"

Matthew, 43, said he didn't mind sacrificing his usual look for the part.

He said: "There is something valuable to not being able to use certain things that may be a strength. You use other instruments."

Matthew also commented on scenes in the film, which is based on a true story, where his character is diagnosed and tells the doctor he believes he can't have HIV because he isn't gay.

He said: "We had to go all the way unabashed with that. I would go as far as I could with the stuff that Ron thought, which was the stuff that made people go 'You bigot, racist'."

The film sees Ron illegally import drugs from other countries for HIV and Aids because of the lack of approved treatments in the US. He also becomes friends and business partner with a transgender man, played by Jared Leto.

Talking about the Oscar buzz around Dallas Buyers Club, Matthew said: "I'm very excited about that possibility. I feel that it is more than fair to judge art. If that happened that's wonderful."
