James McAvoy has revealed that he still gets passionate about his film roles.

The Trance star admitted that over the past decade, he has, however, become more savvy about the movie-making industry and what goes on behind the scenes.

"I still do the same thing I did when I first started, which is just throw myself in. I am still very enthusiastic," he said.

"I'm not too jaded but I'm much more aware of what goes on in the business and much more aware of how I can do my job better and how not to be distracted by irrelevant stuff. Whereas when I started, I was taking it all in and getting distracted easily. But you just throw yourself in up to your neck and hopefully interesting things happen."

James stars in Eran Creevy's new movie Welcome To The Punch, a slick cops and robbers-style action thriller shot in the City of London, where he plays police detective Max Lewinsky.

The film follows the story of two male protagonists, Max and Jacob Sternwood (Mark Strong), operating on different sides of the law.

"I think we do great gritty British drama but I really responded to the fact that this director, this particular script, these particularly characters, seemed like something out of a Hong Kong action movie," the actor said.

"It's a lot slicker and sharper and a lot more beautiful, dare I say it, than the usual geezer street gangster kind of thing."

:: Welcome To The Punch opens in cinemas on March 15, while Trance is released on March 27.
