James McAvoy has revealed that people should "expect the unexpected" with Frankenstein.

The Filth actor has completed shooting Paul McGuigan's big-screen adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic horror tale, in which he stars as Victor Von Frankenstein alongside Daniel Radcliffe as his hunchbacked assistant Igor.

"I think it's going to surprise people. Expect the unexpected. It's not really the same telling as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein but it is definitely inspired by and riffs off the same themes, and asks the same questions," he said.

"That was a very controversial book and hopefully this is a slightly controversial movie," he added.

James - who picked up the best actor gong at the Jameson Empire Awards - enjoyed working with his co-star Dan, particularly on the physical scenes.

"Dan's brilliant. He's hard-working and physical as hell. You can throw him against the wall and he bounces, which is something I've always liked in myself, so to work with an actor who can do that too is amazing," he said.

"We made it way more physical than the script suggested, which is great because it is a film about anatomy. It is a story about pushing that science as far as it can go. So to see the two actors playing the parts in it push themselves physically and as far as their anatomies can go was quite good fun."

James, who reprises his role as Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, is now looking forward to spending more time with his wife Anne-Marie Duff and their son Brendan.

"I've just finished Frankenstein and I am now working on trying to be well-adjusted outside of work. I'm just taking it easy - just taking care of my wee boy, cook food and pretend I can play the guitar," he revealed.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past will open in cinemas on May 22, while Frankenstein will be released in 2015.
