Making waves: Three of von Trier's best

Breaking the Waves (1996)

Von Trier's controversial drama stars Emily Watson as the disturbed and deeply religious wife of a paralysed oil worker who starts debasing herself with other men in the belief that doing so will keep him alive.

Dogville (2003)

This stylised and deliberately theatrical drama stars Nicole Kidman as a woman on the run from gangsters in 1930s America who seeks refuge in a small town but soon begins to regret it when they start treating her like a slave.

Melancholia (2011)

In this dark and clever meditation on the vanity of human civilisation, a manic depressive woman on the verge of marrying becomes convinced that the world's about to end, and may be on to something. Kirsten Dunst stars.
