Madonna broke down in tears while she talked about her late mother at a screening of her movie WE.
The Queen of Pop attended a special screening of her directorial debut - which tells the story of King Edward VIII's love affair with American divorcee Wallis Simpson - at Ziegfeld Theatre in New York, reports People.
She was emotional as she thanked her mum, who died of breast cancer when the star was six.
"I would like to thank my mother," said the 53-year-old, appearing to choke back tears. "Because, really, this story is the story of a female's, the journey of a female, soul. And my mother gave me life."
Madonna had already warned the audience at the Cinema Society premiere that she could be emotional when she was tired.
She said: "Anybody that knows me knows that when I'm tired, I cry.
"If I cry, please, just don't hold it against me. I'm really not a sentimental kind of a person."
